FORT LEE, Va. – With Saturday morning’s weather forecast calling for rain, Fort Lee officials postponed the Run for the Fallen to Saturday, May 20.

The time and location of the event remain the same – with the run beginning at 10 a.m. and check-in opening at 8:30 a.m. at Williams Stadium.

Pre-registration is extended to 5 p.m., May 17. Packet pick-up will continue through May 19 at the Army Community Services office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or at the event. Participants may register the morning of the event and elect to walk or run a 1-mile or 5-mile course.

The submission period for photographs of fallen military service members for display along the run route is also extended. Submit photos to angela.m.bellamy2.civ@mail.mil or christine.i.murphy.civ@mail.mil no later than 5 p.m., May 15.


Registration open for run honoring fallen military heroes

FORT LEE, Va. – Registration is open for Fort Lee’s seventh annual Run for the Fallen, set for 10 a.m., May 13, at Williams Stadium. Participation is free and open to the public.

“This run reminds us all there is a cost to freedom,” said Angela Bellamy, Fort Lee Survivor Outreach Services coordinator. “It shows our Gold Star Families their loved ones’ names and sacrifices are never forgotten – that we will always remember.”

The event will include a survivors’ lap led by the Virginia Patriot Guard and remarks by featured speaker, E. Bruce Heilman, Chancellor at the University of Richmond. A Marine “once and always,” Heilman is a national spokesman for The Greatest Generation Foundation and The Spirit of ‘45.

Participants may elect to walk or run a 1-mile or 5-mile course. Run pre-registration is available through 5 p.m., Thursday, May 11 at www.leemwr.com/runforthefallen or by calling (804) 734-6445 or 734-6446. Registration also is available the morning of the race. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., May 13 and previously unregistered participants may also check-in at that time.

For pre-registered runners, packet pick-up is available at the Army Community Services office May 9-10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at the event.

Run for the Fallen is part of a national, nonprofit initiative that started 10 years ago when a group of civilians decided to run from Fort Irwin, Calif., to Arlington National Cemetery.

Last year at the Fort Lee event alone, 6,400 participants paid tribute to fallen military members by running and walking more than 18,000 miles. Each year, the total mile figure is reported to the national Run for the Fallen organization.
