FORT LEE, Va. – To comply with federal law, Fort Lee will no longer accept state-issued identification from certain U.S. states for visitor access to the installation.

Effective today, driver licenses and identification cards issued by Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico and Washington, as well as the American Samoa territory will not be accepted as a valid form of identification when requesting visitor access to Fort Lee.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards. The purposes covered by the Act are: accessing Federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and, no sooner than 2016, boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft.

Those possessing a valid Department of Defense issued identification card are not affected by this change.

Those requesting entry with driver licenses or identification cards from the states and territory listed above must provide additional identity documentation for access. Acceptable alternate forms of identification include: a US passport, a permanent resident card/Alien Registration Receipt Card (form 1-551), a foreign passport with a temporary I-551 stamp or visa or an employment authorization document that contains a photograph (Form I-766).
