First lady of the commonwealth Dorothy McAuliffe will be the featured speaker at the Fort Lee Volunteer Appreciation Reception set for April 14, 2 p.m., at the Lee Club.

More than 100 community members will be recognized at the event that also will feature remarks by Maj. Gen. Darrell K. Williams, Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee commanding general.

WHAT: Fort Lee Volunteer Appreciation Reception

WHEN: 2 p.m., Thursday, April 14

WHERE: Lee Club, Fort Lee

The volunteer reception provides a venue for installation leaders to show their appreciation for the giving individuals who support their offices and organizations. “Our Fort Lee volunteers in 2015 recorded 147,057 hours through my office, which the Department of the Army equates to $3,316,124.08 worth of services,” said Susan Loden, Army Volunteer Corps Coordinator for the installation. “We could not provide the amazing programs and events we have on Fort Lee without our volunteers. As budgets continue to tighten, the importance of volunteering continues to grow.”

“Volunteers throughout our community give of themselves and their time all year long in incredible ways and for all the right reasons,” Loden said. “National Volunteer Week (April 10-16) is our chance to recognize those efforts at the organizational and individual level. The volunteer reception is the installation’s signature event … an opportunity for the command to shine the spotlight on these individuals and publicly thank them.”

McAuliffe has an “exemplary record of volunteer service,” Loden noted. She is leading the way in Virginia’s efforts to encourage and elevate national service as a pathway for solving challenges in local communities, deepening the appreciation for living in America and broadening public assistance programs.

“It is truly an honor to have her take time out of her busy schedule to come here and serve as our guest speaker,” Loden said. “What a wonderful recognition for our military community and its dedicated volunteers.”

Admission to the volunteer reception is free and open to everyone in the Fort Lee community.

Media planning to attend must contact Susan Garling at susan.n.garling.civ@mail.mil or (804) 734-6893 by noon Thursday to coordinate installation access for the ceremony and escort to the event.
